Health Certification For Your Pet’s Travel

Planning a trip with your furry friend? Cornwallis Road Animal Hospital is here to help you navigate the process of obtaining pet health certificates, whether you’re traveling within the United States or internationally.

Understanding Pet Health Certificates

Pet health certificates are essential for ensuring your pet meets all travel requirements. Since different destinations have unique criteria, it’s crucial to start planning well in advance. We recommend initiating the process at least two months before domestic travel and four months before international travel. For destinations requiring rabies titers, such as Hawaii or Australia, additional time may be necessary. Stay updated on specific requirements at aphis.usda.gov/aphis/pet-travel.

Preparing for Your Pet’s Journey

To ensure a smooth travel experience for your pet, follow these steps:

For Car Travel:

  • Carry your pet’s vaccination history.
  • Bring their most current rabies certificate.
  • Obtain a veterinarian-issued pet health certificate detailing their latest wellness exam.

For Air Travel:

  • Research the airline’s pet policies as they can vary. Some airlines have specific requirements, while others adhere to the destination’s regulations.
  • Ask your airline these crucial questions:
    1. What are your pet travel policies?
    2. Is there cargo space available for larger pets, and how does it affect flight options?
    3. Are small pets allowed in the cabin?
    4. What are the pet carrier requirements?
    5. What are the pick-up and drop-off policies for pets?
    6. How are layovers managed for pets?

Only USDA-certified veterinarians can issue international health certificates, so be sure to schedule your appointment with us well in advance of your trip.
